The Email Verifier evaluates technical signals associated with an email address. The verification process can examine address syntax, the domain, DNS and mail-exchange configuration, and SMTP-related signals where they are available.
The result is designed to help you assess whether an address appears technically suitable for email delivery at the time of verification.
How to verify an email address

Verification signals
The verifier can expose multiple technical signals. Availability can vary according to the domain, receiving mail infrastructure, network conditions, and the response behavior of the destination mail system.

| Syntax | Checks whether the address follows the expected structural format for an email address. A syntax failure means the address should not be treated as a valid email address. |
| Domain | Evaluates the domain portion of the address and whether the domain can be resolved as part of the verification process. |
| DNS | Checks relevant Domain Name System information used to evaluate the technical configuration of the email domain. |
| MX | Checks for mail-exchange infrastructure associated with the domain. MX records identify mail systems responsible for receiving email for a domain. |
| SMTP | Where the receiving infrastructure permits useful verification signals, SMTP-related checks can provide additional information about the address. Some providers deliberately limit or obscure these responses. |
| Catch-All | A catch-all domain may accept mail for many or all addresses at the domain. This can prevent a verifier from conclusively determining whether one specific mailbox exists. |
Understanding the overall result
Always interpret the overall result together with the underlying signals. Email verification is not a prediction that every future message will be accepted.
Positive verification signals
Positive signals indicate that the address passed the checks that were available during verification. Sending reputation, content, recipient policy, throttling, spam filtering, and later mailbox changes can still affect delivery.
Negative verification signals
A negative result can indicate a structural problem, unavailable mail infrastructure, an address rejected by an available verification check, or another technical condition that makes the address unsuitable under the current verification policy.
Unknown or inconclusive results
Some mail systems do not expose enough information for a definitive mailbox-level conclusion. Temporary network conditions, provider policy, catch-all configuration, SMTP restrictions, greylisting, or similar conditions can also limit verification certainty.
What is JIT verification?
JIT means Just-In-Time. Instead of relying only on an old verification result, the verification workflow evaluates current technical signals when the verification request is processed.
This is useful because email infrastructure and mailbox status can change over time. A previously working address can later become unavailable, and domain or mail-server configuration can also change.

LastDatabase provides a public Email Verifier through the Tools section. Customer-account verification functionality can also be available through the authenticated LastDatabase customer workspace.
The interface, limits, history, available workflow features, and usage allowance can depend on the current verification service and account plan. Use the information displayed in your account as the authoritative source for your current allowance.
Verification credits
Email verification usage is accounted for separately from lead-data access. Verification credits or verification allowances should not be treated as lead-record credits.

Why verification can change over time
Email verification represents signals available at a particular point in time. Results can change because:
- A mailbox can be created, disabled, deleted, or suspended.
- A company can migrate to another email provider.
- MX or DNS configuration can change.
- A receiving server can change its SMTP response policy.
- A domain can enable or disable catch-all behavior.
- Temporary mail-server or network conditions can affect a check.
For time-sensitive workflows, verify addresses as close as practical to the intended use.
Catch-all domains
Catch-all mail systems require special interpretation. A catch-all server can accept messages for addresses without confirming that each individual mailbox exists.
A catch-all signal therefore should not be interpreted as definitive proof that the specific recipient mailbox exists or will accept a future message.
SMTP verification limitations
SMTP infrastructure is not required to provide mailbox-verification information to third parties. Providers can accept an SMTP conversation while later rejecting a message, conceal mailbox status, temporarily defer requests, apply rate limits, or return responses intended to discourage automated probing.
For this reason, LastDatabase presents verification as a collection of signals rather than a guarantee of future message delivery.
Recommended workflow
- Verify addresses close to the time you intend to use them.
- Review the overall result and underlying signals.
- Treat catch-all and inconclusive results separately from stronger results.
- Maintain your own suppression and opt-out lists.
- Remove addresses that generate permanent delivery failures.
- Monitor bounce and complaint rates in your sending platform.
- Re-verify older records when freshness is important.
Responsible use
Technical verification does not determine whether you have a lawful basis or permission to contact a person. Customers remain responsible for their own outreach practices and for complying with applicable laws, regulations, platform rules, suppression requirements, and recipient requests.

Does a verified email guarantee delivery?
No. Verification evaluates technical signals available during the check. Future delivery can still be affected by sender reputation, recipient policy, content filtering, throttling, spam controls, mailbox changes, and other factors.
Why can SMTP be inconclusive?
Receiving mail servers can intentionally hide mailbox information or restrict automated verification. Temporary network and server conditions can also affect the available response.
What does catch-all mean?
A catch-all domain can accept email for many addresses without confirming whether each individual mailbox exists. Treat catch-all results separately from more conclusive mailbox-level signals.
Should I verify an address again later?
For older data or time-sensitive sending, re-verification can provide a more current assessment because mailbox and domain conditions can change.
Are verification credits the same as lead credits?
